Foster Grandparent Program Operating under a federal grant it is part of the National Senior Service Corps and the Corporation for National Community Service. It offers low-income seniors an opportunity to remain active, earn tax-free income, and serve their community while playing a vital role in the lives of children. Foster Grandparents must be at least 60 years of age, meet certain income guidelines, and be able to give 20 hours per week to the program. They serve in places such as schools, head start centers, day cares, child development centers, and children's departments of local libraries. Sometimes the children to whom they are assigned are innocent victims of abuse, neglect, disease, illiteracy, chemical dependency, disability, or homelessness. The love and affection given by the Foster Grandparents are often the only one-on-one attention many of these children ever receive. This extra care has been credited with helping children catch up to their grade level, boosting self-esteem and academic scores, helping to keep children off the streets and in a safe and structured environment, and preventing at-risk children from "falling through the cracks." The children are not the only ones who benefit. Those who serve as Foster Grandparents say the program helps to ease loneliness, puts meaning into their lives, gives them a feeling of worth and, in general, is the best thing that has ever happened to them. In addition to the love of their assigned children, Foster Grandparents receive a small hourly stipend, paid leave time, a free annual physical, reimbursement for travel and meal expense, insurance coverage, and training. They also enjoy fellowship with other Foster Grandparents through monthly meetings, picnics, trips, special get-togethers and recognition events. The Foster Grandparent Program serves the counties of It is sponsored by New River Behavioral HealthCare and United Way of Wilkes. SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM The Senior Companion Program operates under a federal grant and is part of the National Senior Service Corps and the Corporation for National Community Service. It offers low-income seniors an opportunity to remain active, earn tax-free income, and serve their community while helping fellow senior citizens in need. Senior Companions must be at least 60 years of age, meet certain income guidelines, and be able to give 20 hours per week to the program. Most serve in private homes and provide assistance and friendship to those who have difficulty with daily living tasks. As well as easing many hours of loneliness, the Senior Companion may help the client with activities such as paying bills, grocery shopping, remembering to take medications, and finding transportation to medical appointments. This extra care has enabled many senior citizens to retain their dignity and independence rather than having to move to expensive institutionalized care. The lives of the Senior Companions, as well as those of their clients, are greatly enriched by this interaction. Senior Companions say the program gives them a reason to get up in the morning, helps ease loneliness and gives them a feeling of self-worth. In addition to friendships formed. Senior Companions receive a small hourly stipend, paid leave time, a free annual physical, reimbursement for travel and meal expense, insurance coverage, and training. They also enjoy fellowship with other Senior Companions through monthly meetings, picnics, trips, special get-togethers and recognition events. The Senior Companion Program serves the counties of It is sponsored by New River Behavioral HealthCare and United Way of Wilkes, and High Country United Way.
